Lando Norris has taken responsibility after colliding with his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, during the sprint race at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Both drivers crashed on the final lap when Norris attempted an overtaking maneuver that ended with both vehicles in a turn.
The incident caused Norris, who had initially finished fourth, to drop back to eighth place, while Piastri was forced to retire. Thus, the British driver has acknowledged that his action harmed the team and that he needs to consider the interest of the collective more than his own.
The team principal, Andrea Stella, described the incident as “unacceptable” and noted that conversations will be held to prevent a similar situation from occurring again. Norris, for his part, expressed his regret: “I let the team down and I’ve apologized to them. I’ll have to do better next time”.
After this setback, Norris managed to recover in the Sunday race, where he finished in fourth place, despite not being able to reach the podium. Unlike the sprint race, he passed several rivals and showed good pace, though he diagnosed that his performance was not optimal and that he could have fought better for a higher result.
With this performance, McLaren continues recording races without podiums, following the summer victories in Hungary and the Netherlands, and Norris has admitted to feeling concerned about the car’s speed in future grands prix.
