Despite his two consecutive victories, Lando Norris has expressed his concern about his ability to compete for the world championship in F1 in the upcoming races. He currently sits fourth in the standings, with 159 points, far behind the 242 points of Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader.
After his victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, Norris was clear in his statements: “I don’t have the car I need to fight for the championship”. Norris’s comments highlight the complexity of the current competition, with several drivers questioning the quality of their vehicles.
The McLaren MCL40, according to Norris, performs well on fast circuits but is not as competitive on tracks that require better control at slow speeds. “We are very competitive at high speed, but in the slow corners, the performance is not the same”, he added.
Despite his recent positive form, with two wins and two consecutive poles, Norris remains cautious and lacks confidence in being able to fight for the top spot for the remainder of the season. “Even though I’ve won, the nature of the car makes me feel we may have difficulties in several upcoming races”.
Additionally, Norris referenced the differences in performance of the various tires, situations where he has experienced difficulties. In Saturday’s race, he struggled with the degradation of the medium tires, and during the grand prix, he had to make several changes that altered his strategy.
Finally, Norris acknowledged that the team must identify and address the weaknesses of the McLaren to face the end of the season with confidence. “We need to work in those areas if we want to have real competition”, he concluded.
