Lando Norris criticizes the new Formula 1 regulations

Lando Norris, McLaren driver, has expressed his disappointment with the new Formula 1 regulations for 2026, stating that the category has gone from having “the best cars in history” to “probably the worst.” His criticism focuses on the emphasis on energy harvesting which, according to him, distorts the driving experience.

Norris finished the qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix in sixth place, a result that reflects strong competition. However, what concerns him most is how the new cars require meticulous management to optimize the use of electrical energy. The vehicles are now lighter and more curvy, but Norris pointed out that there are drastic decreases in speed at key parts of the circuit.

“Everyone knows the problems that exist,” Norris commented. “It’s a divided situation and it doesn’t work. You have to brake much earlier before the corners to ensure the battery is at maximum. This makes it difficult for us drivers. We have gone from the most enjoyable cars to drive to possibly the worst. It’s not rewarding, but it’s what we have.”

In contrast, pole sitter George Russell from Mercedes defended the new rules, pointing out that the current cars are more agile and offer a more dynamic driving experience. Russell explained that while there are diverse opinions regarding the regulations, he believes they are a step forward compared to recent years.

Norris’s opinion has found support among other drivers, such as Max Verstappen, who also criticized some aspects of this new era of motorsport. With the season just starting, the reactions from drivers and the evolution of the cars will become ongoing topics of debate.
