Brake damage limits Lando Norris at the British GP

Lando Norris, McLaren driver, faced a challenging weekend during the qualifying for the sprint of the British GP at Silverstone. The team’s situation, with a less aerodynamically efficient MCL40 car, resulted in a sixth and seventh place qualifying for Norris and his teammate, Oscar Piastri.

Expectations were already low, given that McLaren is behind competitors like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull. The lack of performance in energy management and in terms of drag has hindered their options at a Silverstone that demands a lot mechanically.

During the sprint qualifying session, Norris suffered significant damage to the front brake ducts. This failure forced him to change the car’s nose, which negatively impacted his performance in the third qualifying round (SQ3).

“Everything was quite worse than I thought, but in the end, we managed to fix it for the last round,” Norris commented, after feeling that the car behaved differently with the last-minute repairs. Despite the setbacks, the times ultimately came closer to Lewis Hamilton‘s pole, with a gap of three-tenths.”

In his projection for Saturday’s race, Norris will face George Russell from Mercedes, who he expects to be very quick. “Maybe we can compete against Max Verstappen from Red Bull, who starts third, but Mercedes’ acceleration is clearly superior,” he added. The competition will be tough, but Norris remains hopeful, noting that it is always possible to make improvements before the race.

Piastri, for his part, also felt a similar disappointment with the seventh position, acknowledging that the performance was not as good as he had hoped. He stressed that the day had been challenging. “We tried to give it our all and ended up more or less where we thought, but it’s frustrating not to get the maximum performance that I know the car can offer,” concluded the Australian driver.
