Kyle Kirkwood has put in a standout performance at the Honda Indy 200 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, finishing in third position and moving up to second place in the championship standings.
Starting from tenth place with his Honda #27 from Andretti Global, this Florida driver faced 90 tough laps without caution on a 2.258-mile circuit full of challenges. The high temperatures, peaking at 35 degrees, added an intense physical component to the race, as drivers had no opportunities to rest from the heat.
This is the fourth time Kirkwood has reached the podium this season and the tenth of his career, notably his first podium at a conventional road course within IndyCar.
“It has certainly been one of the most physically demanding days I have ever experienced in a race car,” said Kirkwood. “I’m completely exhausted. Running the whole time in such warm conditions and this circuit is constantly very intense, every lap felt like a qualifying session. My muscles are completely worn out, I could barely hold on.”
Kirkwood attributed his rise in the race to a combination of early overtakes and impeccable execution during pit stops. Although his team did not meet expectations during qualifying, the setup and strategy of the car on race day were crucial for recovering and battling for the top spots.
“We moved from tenth to third place,” he explained. “It was thanks to an effective strategy and good pit stops. We had a good tactic that allowed us to reach the podium, and we also overtook some rivals at the start of the race.”
With only seven races left in the season, Kirkwood stands second in the overall classification, 56 points behind leader Alex Palou (404-348), after narrowing the gap in the last three races.
The win comes at a circuit where Kirkwood has excelled in the past, with eight victories in nine races during his stint in the junior ranks, but had been a challenge in his transition to IndyCar, previously finishing eighth (twice, 2024 and 2025) in four outings on the circuit. He dismissed that he had changed his driving style to improve his performance.
“It’s not that I discovered a new way to drive,” he mentioned. “I haven’t changed my style over the past few years on this track. We had a good test recently and the car was performing well. That speed was evident from the first practice sessions. Although qualifying wasn’t exceptional, the car worked well in practice.”
