Kirkwood claims the IndyCar championship fight “is not over” after a second place in Detroit

Kyle Kirkwood finished second in the latest IndyCar Series race in Detroit, and despite his position, he remains optimistic about his chances of winning the title. In a race marked by several yellow flags, Kirkwood was able to close the gap with the leader, Alex Palou, at one critical moment in the competition.

After starting in sixth place, the Andrétti Global driver benefitted from a tire strategy, swapping his for softer alternate tires. Despite this, two incidents that caused the yellow flag limited the opportunities to attack Palou, who showed great consistency in the restarts with his #10 vehicle from Chip Ganassi Racing.

Kirkwood crossed the finish line 3.0584 seconds behind Palou, who is the reigning champion and has achieved his third podium this season. Currently, the Florida driver is 62 points behind Palou in the standings, with a total of 327 to 265.

Despite the distance, Kirkwood remains optimistic and believes that the competition is far from being decided. “I don’t see it as an insurmountable gap. We’ve shown we can close gaps quickly and there are still many races ahead,” the driver confidently declared.

The next IndyCar challenge will take place at the World Wide Technology Raceway next weekend, where Kirkwood is the defending winner, providing him with extra motivation to fight for the title.
