The victory of Kimi Antonelli in the Spanish Grand Prix increases his lead in the championship, but the Mercedes driver knows he won thanks to luck, a fact he does not forget. This was stated by James Hinchcliffe, former IndyCar driver and Formula 1 analyst.
This triumph, the eighth of the 2026 season, has allowed Antonelli to increase his gap in the standings to 81 points over his teammate, George Russell. However, his victory was made possible by a key moment: the deployment of a virtual safety car right after Lando Norris, who had started from pole, passed by the pit entrance.
Although Norris had established a strong lead during the early laps, Antonelli took advantage of the situation to make a quicker stop and thus secure first place. Hinchcliffe, in his post-race commentary, noted that, despite Antonelli’s good performance, the speed of McLaren with Norris at the wheel is an issue that may cause frustration for the young Italian driver.
“Let me explain, I’m not saying it’s better to be lucky than to be good, but in the motorsport world, having luck and talent is a formidable combination. Antonelli is a good driver, but using luck, he acknowledged it in the post-race interview. If a driver is aware that there is someone faster than him, winning, even if it is, always leaves a certain ‘pain'”, commented Hinchcliffe.
The competition in the championship is intense and, despite Antonelli demonstrating his ability to win, the pressure to be the best will only grow as the season progresses.
