Kimi Antonelli achieves surprise pole in Austin with a complicated Mercedes

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, leader of the Formula 1 championship, has achieved pole position at the United States Grand Prix, in a result that reflects Mercedes’ effort to adjust their car, faster but also more difficult to handle. This is Antonelli’s first pole since the Belgium race in July.

The Italian driver outpaced the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, while Ferrari had a challenging day, finishing in fourth and fifth positions during the qualifying session at the iconic Circuit of the Americas in Austin.

The windy conditions made the first qualifying round crucial. Antonelli surprised, as the competition had anticipated a fight between Verstappen and the Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The young driver demonstrated great consistency in a weekend that promised to be challenging.

The changes implemented by Mercedes in the last update in Malaysia have improved the car’s overall performance, although its configuration continues to present challenges. Antonelli highlighted the importance of achieving the right balance during practice sessions and especially in qualifying.

“I am very happy because we have worked hard on this package and we are still trying to fully understand it,” Antonelli commented after his performance. “Since Singapore we have made a lot of progress and now we just have to keep working on it. Finally, we are seeing the results.”

His performance in Austin offers him a first opportunity, albeit remote, to clinch the championship if he wins the race this Sunday and his teammates perform poorly. Antonelli is optimistic but realistic: “I will just try to have the best race possible and then we will see what happens.”

With the pressure of the championship on his shoulders, the 20-year-old driver shows a relaxed attitude and is ready to enjoy the competition: “I feel I can enjoy driving more because I am in a very good position, but the mentality remains the same.”
