Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the young Mercedes driver, has decided to keep the number 12 for the upcoming Formula 1 season. This decision will mark a significant change, as for the first time since 2021, we will not see the number 1 on the grid, an option that drivers like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have chosen after winning their world titles.
In an interview following his victory at the Mexican Grand Prix, Antonelli explained that the number 12 holds special meaning for him. ‘The truth is that the number 12 is very important in my life. I like to stay humble and the number 12 allows me to start over and focus on improving,’ the driver commented.
This number is a tribute to the iconic Ayrton Senna, one of his idols, and was the first he carried in his single-seater competitions, including Formula 4. Additionally, Antonelli is the first driver after Senna, in 1988, to achieve the world title with the number 12.
Antonelli also revealed that he is very superstitious, and that his experience with the number 1 has not been positive. ‘It hasn’t gone well for me when I’ve used the number 1, so that is also a reason to stick with 12,’ he laughed as he explained his choice.
After winning the title, Antonelli plans to celebrate upon his return home, after the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. ‘I want to enjoy every moment of this success,’ the driver said, showing his intention to continue with a positive attitude in the future.
