Katherine Legge aims for the double at Indy 500 and Coke 600 next week

Katherine Legge has secured a last-minute agreement to attempt the double challenge in the upcoming edition of the Indy 500 and Coke 600. The news has been recently confirmed, surprising all motorsport fans.

This season, the 45-year-old driver will participate in the 110th edition of the Indy 500, representing the No. 11 HMD Motorsports/AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet. Undoubtedly, this will be her fifth appearance in this iconic race.

Furthermore, Legge will also participate in the 67th edition of the Coke 600, which will take place on the same day, May 24, at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. If all goes well and weather conditions allow, she will become the sixth driver in history to compete in both races on the same day, as well as the oldest to do so.

Legge recently returned to racing in the latest Cup Series event at Watkins Glen, where she marked her eighth start in the competition. She will get back behind the wheel of her No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet at Charlotte, with support from e.l.f. Cosmetics, which also sponsors her for the Indy 500.

An unusual challenge

The last driver to attempt the double was Kyle Larson, champion of the NASCAR Cup Series. Other notable names who have attempted this feat include Robby Gordon, John Andretti, Kurt Busch, and Tony Stewart, with the latter being the only one to complete all laps during 2001.

Although before the race at Watkins Glen, Legge expressed interest in attempting the double, the agreement came sooner than many expected, with only two weeks until the competition.

Legge’s best result in the Indy 500 was a 22nd place finish in 2012. Despite debuting in the Cup just over a year ago, she has experience in oval racing in the main stock car championship in the United States. Her best result so far was a 17th place in the Brickyard 400 in 2025.

Although her spot in the Indy 500 is secured with no possibility of being cut, it will still be necessary to wait to know the official number of entries for the Coke 600, which will be made public next Monday, to see if she will need to qualify to compete.
