Karun Chandhok expresses his concern about the performance of Mercedes’ updates in F1

Karun Chandhok, former Formula 1 driver and current analyst for Sky Sports, has expressed concern over Mercedes’ latest aerodynamic advancements. Despite expectations, the updates have not managed to significantly improve the performance of the team’s vehicles, which has faced a stalled situation in the recent races.

In the last two races, Max Verstappen from Red Bull achieved victory in Malaysia and Singapore, while the updated Mercedes driven by Andrea Kimi Antonelli did not deliver the expected results. With Antonelli positioned third in Singapore and George Russell, starting from the penultimate position, finishing ninth, Chandhok rated the weekend as ‘not overwhelmingly positive.’

According to Chandhok, the aerodynamic update has not provided the necessary performance leap. Although Antonelli has proven to be a strong competitor, the report indicates that the improvement in performance has not been sufficient to clearly distinguish himself from his more experienced counterpart.

Championship situation

Currently, Antonelli leads the drivers’ standings with 340 points, while Russell follows with 238 points and Lewis Hamilton from Ferrari holds the third position with 229 points. Additionally, Mercedes maintains its lead in the constructors’ championship with 578 points, well ahead of Ferrari and McLaren, which occupy second and third positions with 444 and 339 points, respectively.

The situation creates unease within the Brackley team, as their rivals seem to have found a more competitive rhythm. Chandhok suggests that the team will need to reflect on the effectiveness of their updates and adjust their strategy for future races.
