Josef Newgarden has claimed a spectacular victory in the Good Ranchers 250 held at the Phoenix Raceway, solidifying an impeccable weekend for Team Penske. With an action-packed race, Newgarden, who started from the tenth position in a restart, showcased his driving skills to climb to first place and secure his 33rd victory in the IndyCar series.
The Tennessee driver surpassed Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global by a margin of 1.77937 seconds, capping off a race that had several unexpected twists. David Malukas, Newgarden’s teammate at Team Penske, completed the podium in third position.
Race Development
Malukas began the race with a solid advantage, leading during the early laps with about a 2-second gap over Newgarden. However, the first yellow flag appeared after Dennis Hauger of Dale Coyne Racing spun out on lap 2.
After the restart, Malukas maintained the lead, but the race quickly became complicated when Graham Rahal passed Alex Palou, who fell out of the race in his hundredth start.
Pit Stop Strategies
Malukas made his pit stop on lap 73, and soon found himself battling Newgarden in an intense fight. The tire change was key, and Newgarden executed a stellar maneuver to overtake his teammate.
In the restart following the second yellow flag, Kirkwood took the lead, but Newgarden regained speed in the final laps, managing to pass Kirkwood to claim the victory. This triumph allows Newgarden to start the season on the right foot, solidifying his place as one of the standout drivers in IndyCar.
