The rider of the Aprilia Racing Team, Jorge Martín, has confirmed that he will travel to Qatar with the aim of competing, despite not yet being fully recovered from the fracture in the radius of his right hand.
Martín suffered a high-speed fall during the sprint race of the Australian Grand Prix, where he was vying for victory with Marc Márquez. The accident caused him a fracture in his right wrist, which incapacitated him from participating in the main race, which was ultimately suspended due to rain and fog.
After the incident, the rider spent five days preparing for a possible competition in Sepang, but he could not maintain the pace, finishing almost two seconds behind the fastest times in the first practice session. This led him to withdraw before Saturday’s qualifying.
On Wednesday, both the team and Martín agreed that the rider would travel to Qatar, depending on the evolution of his injury and whether he was able to exert the necessary strength to brake the bike at Losail, one of his main obstacles in Malaysia.
“It’s not pleasant not being able to continue in Sepang, but having had the opportunity to try is, in itself, a success,” Martín commented, who will now spend a few more days in Spain to continue his treatment and arrive in Qatar in the best possible shape.
In Qatar, competition is presented as skewed, as Yamaha riders will not be able to participate due to a contractual clause that limits travel to areas with armed conflicts. On the other hand, Márquez has the opportunity to secure his title for the eighth time, needing to accumulate 30 more points than Martín and eight more than his teammate, Marco Bezzecchi.
Bezzecchi, for his part, did not have an easy weekend in Malaysia, finishing in sixth place on Sunday. With 66 points behind Márquez, he will need an aggressive performance at Losail to try to delay the celebrations of rider 93.
