Jorge Martin, a rider fighting against the ghosts of Barcelona

Jorge Martin, rider for the Aprilia Racing Team, has acknowledged that he struggles to forget the negative memories of his accident during the recent Catalonia Grand Prix, where he fell six times during an intense weekend of competition and testing.

After a decent first day of work at the Mugello circuit, where the Italian Grand Prix is held this Sunday, Martin shared his concerns about his confidence when it comes to riding. He needed to make a final lap at the end of the practice session to secure a direct place in Saturday’s Q2 qualifying session, achieving the eighth-best time.

“After all these falls, I always feel like I’m about to fall,” Martin explained. “I have to work on my confidence. I’m used to falling; it’s part of our sport. But, obviously, when you fall six times, you lose confidence.”

The Spanish rider commented that his worries have accompanied him during practice. “Today I was braking and thinking: ‘Maybe I’m about to fall.’ But I didn’t. That’s how, lap by lap, I’m regaining that confidence.”

In his sought-after final lap, Martin experienced difficulties breathing, a fact he acknowledged. “Today I felt like I pushed my limits. I did a lap of 1m45.132s without breathing and, after the lap, I struggled to breathe. I’m still tired from the effort, but that’s our sport. It’s not easy, and I did the best I could.”

Moreover, he mentioned that he had experienced considerable pain in the morning, resulting from his accident in Barcelona, but he consoled himself by saying that the situation had improved throughout the day. “Yes, absolutely, I’ll take something to manage the pain. I feel quite good, but it’s swelling up and I have to watch it.”
