Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has died at the age of 76-years, in his home in Cape Town, while battling aggressive form of prostate cancer.
Having started his career in banking, Jordan moved to racing at a young age. He competed in Formula Ford from where he progressed to Formula 3 and Formula 2 in those times. He tested for McLaren in Formula 1 but never got to compete in the world championship.
One of his biggest races remains the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as he transitioned himself to mentor and team owner role. He initially started out as ‘Eddie Jordan Racing’ in lower formulas in 1979 and found his way up to F1 in 1991 when he founded Jordan Grand Prix.
The team competed in F1 between 1991 and 2005, securing four wins and 18 podiums in all. The team’s best result came in 1999 when they finished third in the constructors’ championship. Jordan eventually sold out as the team became Midland before switching to Force India/Racing Point.
In its present guise, it is Aston Martin after a buyout from Lawrence Stroll. Jordan, meanwhile, took up commentary and punditry role with BBC Sport and Channel 4. He also manages Adrian Newey, who made a big move from Red Bull Racing to Aston Martin this season.
During this period of discussion about Newey’s future, Jordan revealed about suffering from prostate and bladder cancer, which he survived after doctor’s intervention. He is married to Marie McCarthy – former basketball player from Ireland – since 1979 and has four children.
The news broke in early hours of Thursday, on the eve of Chinese GP weekend. The family’s statement confirmed his death in his home in Cape Town. The note mentioned about battling with aggressive form of prostate cancer, which he talked about a year ago.
“Eddie passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of 20th March 2025 at the age of 76, after battling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months,” said the statement.
