Joan Mir will remain unavailable while Honda competes with a single rider in Australia

Joan Mir, rider for Honda HRC, will remain out of competition this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix for health reasons. Honda has confirmed this, stating that they will only participate with Luca Marini, after Mir withdrew during the race at the San Marí Grand Prix on September 13.

Mir’s situation has become complicated, as his teammate Aleix Espargaró, who replaced him during the race in Indonesia, is also out of competition due to a condition known as “arm pump,” which requires surgery.

According to Honda’s statement, “Joan Mir and his medical team are working hard for his return. However, they have determined that the Australian Grand Prix comes too soon, so they will continue to assess his condition.”

Honda needs to provide two riders during the competition, but injuries to Takaaki Nakagami, who fell during a special appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix, and Espargaró have prevented the team from being fully present at Phillip Island, which will be the last Grand Prix at this circuit.

Espargaró had to travel to Malaysia to complete two days of testing with the Honda RC214V bike for 2027, where he also suffered from his health issue again. Honda has indicated that “after voluntarily withdrawing from the Indonesian Grand Prix, Aleix will not travel to Australia due to a chronic compartment syndrome that will require surgery.”

Regarding Joan Mir, little is known about his current condition after withdrawing in Misano. At the time of his withdrawal, he reported that he did not feel fit to compete. Tests carried out in Barcelona revealed “altered blood parameters that require further investigation.”

Initially, Honda announced that Mir would not compete in Austria, but his absences have extended to Motegi and Mandalika. Dr. Ángel Charte, MotoGP medical director, commented that “Mir has been experiencing various symptoms that affect his energy and performance.” He is currently undergoing tests to determine a definitive diagnosis.

The medical recommendation is to follow strict rest and various treatments, while fans await positive news about Mir’s recovery.
