Barcelona to host IndyCar race starting in 2027

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is preparing to host a round of the IndyCar in the summer of 2027, thus confirming the arrival of the North American championship to the heart of Catalonia, where local driver Alex Palou competes.

This decision, which is expected to be officially announced in the coming days, stems from a multi-year agreement. The event will take place in July, according to sources close to the negotiations, which began in June of this year and included complex discussions among those involved.

The Government of Catalonia has played a crucial role in securing this agreement, as it seeks to replace the vacancy left by F1 during 2027, a year in which Formula 1 will only return to Barcelona in 2028, 2030, and 2032.

The IndyCar race will represent the first occasion that this championship competes outside North America since 2013 and will also be the first time it lands in Spain. The race will count as an official round of the championship and will award points for driver and manufacturer standings.

The circuit expects a large turnout, similar to the more than 55,500 spectators who attended the 6 Hours of Barcelona last weekend. The intention is to attract both local and European fans, with Barcelona as the only IndyCar race on the continent and a strong opportunity for North American fans.

Throughout the talks, Ignasi Armengol, director of Fira Circuit, expressed the desire to bring IndyCar to Barcelona, considering it a ‘dream’ and acknowledging the difficulties of closing a deal of this caliber.

With this agreement, Barcelona reaffirms its position as a benchmark for motorsport, and 2027 is expected to mark a new chapter in the history of IndyCar, expanding its international presence after a long time.
