IndyCar has showcased its new IR-28 chassis for the first time at an event reserved for a selection of media. This presentation is a crucial step for the series, as the new vehicle will complete its first laps on track during a two-day test at the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The drivers who will pilot the new IR-28 are Alexander Rossi of Ed Carpenter Racing, winner of the 2016 Indianapolis 500, who will handle the first day, followed by Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing, the current IndyCar champion.
The on-track debut of the IR-28 symbolizes the end of the DW12 chassis, which has been the foundation of competition since 2012. These years have seen multiple aerodynamic, safety, and engine configurations, and now the goal is to move toward a new era.

The new chassis prioritizes not only performance but also driver safety. With a wide cockpit design, the IR-28 exceeds FIA standard requirements, providing greater comfort and adjustments for different driver sizes.
Additionally, the cockpit cooling system has been updated, eliminating the external ducts that created drag and replacing them with integrated channels.

To maintain cost control for teams, rules on initial developments have been established. This will allow teams to gradually adapt to the new system, thus avoiding an excessive financial burden in the short term.
