IndyCar has begun a new era with the presentation of the IR-28 chassis, which was unveiled for the first time to a select group of automotive media. This next-generation chassis will perform its first laps on track during a preliminary test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, scheduled for this weekend.
Driver Alexander Rossi from Ed Carpenter Racing, winner of the 2016 Indianapolis 500, will conduct the first tests on Saturday. On the other hand, Alex Palou from Chip Ganassi Racing, the current IndyCar champion, will pilot the vehicle on Sunday.

Mark Sibla, Senior Vice President of Competition and Operations at IndyCar, shared the details behind the design of the IR-28, developed in collaboration with Dallara. Instead of modifying the previous chassis, a completely new model has been created.
The new vehicle aims to exceed performance and safety standards, with a 2.4-liter engine that increases power, a weight reduction of approximately 45 kg, and a more efficient hybrid system.
Methodical development strategy
Mike O’Gara, Vice President of Competition Engineering, manages the testing schedule and the production of the chassis. Currently, IndyCar uses a ‘mule car’, a test vehicle that incorporates prototype components, to evaluate mechanical and aerodynamic aspects on various circuits.
In the initial phase, the goal is to focus on the characteristics of the chassis and the mechanical aspects, before integrating engines and hybrid systems in future tests.
Aerodynamics and improved driving
One of the priorities of the IR-28 is to optimize driving in turbulent conditions. Dallara has implemented ‘airflow conditioners’ to improve the performance of following vehicles, as well as anti-lift safety features integrated into the chassis design.
The design aims to facilitate deeper overtaking on the circuit, particularly on fast tracks like the IMS.
Safety and driver comfort
The new chassis surpasses FIA safety regulations and features a more spacious cockpit that enhances driver protection. Additionally, the chassis structures have been designed to maximize driver safety, including adjustable pedal assemblies.
Mechanical reinforcement and cost control
To ensure a good level of mechanical grip, IndyCar collaborates with Custom Access to develop a single-supplier suspension system. The new design of the IR-28 has also been designed to allow for future improvements in power and aerodynamics.
This approach seeks to spread development costs over the years, with the aim of minimizing the financial impact on teams.
