IndyCar moves closer to international expansion

IndyCar is at a crucial moment for its international growth, with increasing interest from promoters outside North America. Jonathan Gibson, an executive at Penske Corporation, has confirmed that negotiations in this direction have advanced significantly over the past few years.

In a speech during the Autosport Business Exchange in New York, Gibson highlighted the importance of IndyCar’s diverse driver lineup and the extensive global television coverage. With a grid featuring participants from 13 countries, the series already boasts a recognized presence, especially in South America and Canada.

Growing international interest

Over the last five years, IndyCar has received a growing number of initiatives from international circuits. This is the first time since the visit to São Paulo in 2013 and its last race in Europe in 2007 that the series is betting on a return outside the USA and Canada.

According to Gibson, this interest has materialized in talks with various circuits in Argentina, Mexico, and Japan. In Argentina, Juncos Hollinger Racing organized demonstrations that have reignited interest for a race in the country, although political changes could affect plans. Meanwhile, in Mexico, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez had shown interest in hosting a race, but scheduling conflicts with the FIFA World Cup have prevented its realization.

Possibility of races in Europe and Asia

The conversation extends to Brazil and Colombia, with the mayor of Barranquilla claiming that an event has been secured for 2028, although IndyCar has denied these assertions. On the other hand, discussions with Japanese companies like Honda and Bridgestone continue regarding the possible realization of an event in the country.

Recently, the agreement with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been confirmed to host a race starting in the summer of 2027. This news marks a new chapter for the series, bringing the championship to the home country of one of its standout drivers, Alex Palou. Gibson has indicated that the official announcement of this agreement will be made soon.

Overall, IndyCar’s growth strategy points toward a promising future, expanding its borders and seeking stronger connections with motorsport in other continents.
