Scheduled in the month of September, the Boston Grand Prix, penultimate race of the season had to be cancelled by organizers due to pressure from neighborhood associations.
Since the announcement in May 2015 of a GP in the Boston streets, the organizers were confronted protests from many residents despite the support of the city and the state of Massachusetts. Pressure intensified in recent days, the organizers interrupted the negotiations with the city and now seeking an alternative to organize the race at the beginning of September.
In a statement, the President of the Grand Prix, John Casey said: “An event of this magnitude requires considerable city and state support, and though we did overcome significant obstacles and demands that have been presented to us, the most recent demands regarding the flood zone issues and requirements of additional expenditure on the line of credit with no guarantees of overcoming those issues have left us no options but to cancel the race in Boston and look at other options.”
The group of residents “Coalition Against IndyCar Boston” indicate after the announcement: “We are grateful that the public process has finally worked, and that the people of Boston would have to suffer destruction our streets. From the beginning, it was the wrong place and the wrong time for this kind of event”.
For the site Racer.com, The president of Indycar, Mark Miles, explored the various options available to the series to host a race: the Oval of Gateway in Madison, Illinois or the AutoClub Speedway in Fontana but there are excessive temperature at this period of year. IndyCar could also try to organize a race at Watkins Glen one month after the Nascar race.
