Impressive debut of Isack Hadjar at the F1 Australian GP

The first appearance of Isack Hadjar in the 2026 Formula 1 season has been marked by a standout performance, according to Laurent Mekies, director of the Red Bull team. Despite the young 21-year-old driver having to retire during the race in Melbourne due to a power unit failure, he had demonstrated his ability with a third place in qualifying and a promising start.

Hadjar, who entered the competition with preparation affected by various mechanical failures during the pre-race practices, managed to finish in his first qualifying lap. Mekies noted, “he had a fantastic weekend” and highlighted that he set a competitive pace from the first practice.

The situation contrasts markedly with the previous drivers of the team, who struggled to counter the potential of their teammate, Max Verstappen. Red Bull seems to have found a suitable partner for the four-time world champion, as Hadjar’s performance has been impressive even in adverse conditions.

According to Mekies, Hadjar was ready for a fantastic start in the race, and had it not been for the lack of battery charge, he could have competed against the McLaren drivers. Additionally, he managed to advance from twentieth to sixth place, putting pressure on Lando Norris, although he ultimately could not complete his recovery.

However, the battery charging issue at the start of the race affected both Red Bull cars, a situation Mekies acknowledges as a team responsibility. “We must be able to avoid these circumstances, and the truth is we have been limited in how we charge and discharge the batteries during the warm-up lap,” Mekies commented.

Red Bull now faces the challenge of ensuring that this situation does not happen again in future races, as the season has just begun and the team seeks to stabilize after a promising start.
