Hungarian GP: Norris edges out Piastri by 0.019s in FP1

F1, Hungarian GP, Lando Norris

Lando Norris lead the way marginally over Oscar Piastri in FP1 in F1 Hungarian GP, as Charles Leclerc did well to close up to McLaren pair.

It was cloudy in FP1 of F1 Hungarian GP at Hungaroring, as the track gave opportunity to drivers to undertake multiple quick laps after cool down laps in between. It was McLaren 1-2 but with only 0.019s margin between Lando Norris (1m16.052s) and Oscar Piastri at the top.

The Australian needed an extra lap after a moment for him on his quick lap. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was close third but still two tenths of a second far apart. He had teammate Lewis Hamilton on his tail for long, but for Visa Cash App RB’s Isack Hadjar to leap up to a good fourth.

It dropped Hamilton to fifth, who didn’t feel good in the car. The Brit had a massive lock-up at Turn 1, which was the same for Norris and Aston Martin’s Felipe Drugovich. Haas’ Oliver Bearman was sixth after a late push lap, with Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli in seventh.

He pipped teammate George Russell, who had multiple moments on different laps. He radioed about problems turning the car, which resulted in those multiple moments. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was only ninth from Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll in the Top 10.

Williams’ Alexander Albon slotted in 11th. The Thai looked for most part, but one of his quick laps got hampered after a big moment in the second sector. Haas’ Esteban Ocon was 12th from Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, with Visa Cash App RB’s Liam Lawson in 14th from Williams’ Carlos Sainz.

The Spaniard had a wide run at Turn 1 after he failed to brake properly. Drugovich was 16th after a last minute call to replace injured Fernando Alonso. The call for FP2 will be taken in between the sessions. Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda couldn’t improve on his initial time to be 17th.

Alpine’s Franco Colapinto was 18th from Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto, who did not have a solid outing after moments at two different corners which forced him wide onto the tarmac run-off. Teammate Paul Aron was 20th – filling in for Nico Hulkenberg – but engine trouble ended his session early.

In terms of the PU elements, Albon took his second ES along with a second CE. The likes of Ocon and Hulkenberg took their second set of CE as well. Here: https://www.fia.com/system/files/decision-document/2025_hungarian_grand_prix_-_new_pu_elements_for_this_competition.pdf
