Hungarian GP: Gasly quickest in a rain-affected FP2 at Hungaroring

Pierre Gasly, Hungarian GP, F1

Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly ended up as the quickest in second practice session of F1 Hungarian GP from Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in wet conditions.

The FP2 session of F1 Hungarian GP at Hungaroring started under drizzling conditions with drivers getting some laps on the slick compounds before it started to rain more steadily, which required them to run on the intermediate compounds after a long wait.

With it already raining, their initial dry run was hampered further by a red flag due to Toro Rosso’s Alexander Albon’s crash in the final corner when he put a wheel on the grass, which was enough for him to go off and hit the tyre barrier, damaging his car.

It was a Red Bull 1-2 in the end in the FP2 session with Gasly being the quickest with a 1m17.854s lap on the soft compound, as Verstappen (1m17.909s) was second on the medium tyres and Hamilton (1m17.995s) lined up third on the hard compound.

Having lost most of the FP1 session, Bottas (1m18.184s) hoped to have more run in FP2 but the Finn couldn’t do much on the dry compound to be fourth on the mediums. It was Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo (1m18.597s) in fifth as the best of the rest.

Behind him, it was Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen (1m18.682s) in sixth – both on the soft compound, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (1m18.852s) in seventh on the medium as the rest of the Top 10 drivers set their time on the soft compound.

It was Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg (1m18.892s) ahead of Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi (1m18.909s) and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat (1m18.957s) as the Haas duo just missed on a slot with Romain Grosjean (1m19.149s) in 11th from Kevin Magnussen (1m19.178s).

The former set his time on the mediums, while the latter was on a hard compound like Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel (1m19.254s), who was 13th from McLaren’s Carlos Sainz (1m19.398s) on the medium and the two Racing Point drivers, who were on hard tyres.

It was Sergio Perez (1m19.721s) ahead of Lance Stroll (1m19.774s), with Williams’ George Russell (1m19.889s) and Robert Kubica (1m20.439s) sandwiching Lando Norris (1m20.401s) as the Williams drivers were on the soft and the McLaren on the medium.
