Honda will introduce a new Formula 1 engine to Aston Martin during the Dutch GP

Honda has announced that it will introduce an updated engine to Aston Martin during the Dutch Grand Prix. Shintaro Orihara, track manager and chief engineer of Honda, made this statement in the lead-up to the Belgian Grand Prix, reporting that the new power unit will be available after “two more races”.

In his statements, Orihara emphasized the importance of continuing to learn with the current engine specification, to apply the conclusions about energy deployment in future races, such as Monza, which features long straights.

This change presents a crucial opportunity for Aston Martin, which has experienced a challenging start to the season. The drivers, including Fernando Alonso, have struggled with competitiveness, with only one point scored in Monaco that contrasts with initial expectations.

The Honda engine has been regarded as the weakest on the grid under the new ADUO (Additional Development and Improvement Opportunities) regulations, meaning they are focused on the improvements they will introduce at Zandvoort after the summer break.

Despite this, Aston Martin is expected to continue facing difficulties in the upcoming races in Belgium and Hungary. The drivers have qualified in the last positions in previous tests, showing a significantly lower performance than the competition, including newcomer Cadillac.

Orihara added that the Spa circuit will be a real challenge in terms of energy management, highlighting the need to plan the deployment of MGU-K power adequately. Additionally, the influence of weather conditions may lead to complex situations, as the weather in Spa is known to be variable.

Aston Martin has been focusing its attention on the 2027 vehicle, making it less likely that they can catch up with the competition this season, due to budget limits and restrictions on aerodynamic testing.
