Thirty minutes into the session, Felipe Massa (Williams)lost the grip when the DRS closed, braked on the grass and hit the wall in the first corner, provoking a red flag. When the red flag went out, Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) led the way ahead of Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari). Mercedes drivers had not marked any laptime. Ten minutes later, the session went green again with Nico Rosberg (Mercedes), the first one heading on track for an out-lap like most of drivers before the session went calm again.
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), with thirty-five minutes to go, was the last one to set a time just before Rosberg set the fastest time with ultra-soft tyres, beaten right afterwards by his teammate. Lots of mistakes are seen in the last corner as the rules are very severe when one cuts this chicane.
With five minutes to go, Jenson Button (McLaren Honda) was sent out on track with a steaming car which had to be boxed right afterwards.
The timing sheets did not change until the chequered flag, Hamilton leads the way ahead of Robserg and Vettel. Verstappen, Raikkonen, Bottas, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Perez and Alonso complete the top 10.
