Lewis Hamilton plans to continue in Formula 1 until he is 40

Lewis Hamilton has expressed his intention to keep competing in Formula 1 during “the foreseeable future”, as long as he can maintain competitive performance. This statement emerged following the recently announced Africa Grand Prix, which will take place in Rwanda starting in 2030 at the earliest.

This new race means that the British driver, at 41 years old, would have to remain active well into his 40s to have the opportunity to participate in the inaugural event. Hamilton dismissed speculation about a possible retirement, although he acknowledged that if the race takes place as planned, he will be around 45.

“We have never had anyone like me in the last 70 years. I think I am built differently,” Hamilton said. He pointed out that although age presents new challenges, he feels capable of competing at the same level as younger drivers, highlighting his quick reaction in the last race.

Additionally, Hamilton commented on the importance of keeping the mind active and healthy, as well as the willingness to make sacrifices to continue competing. “I am still fully involved, and I will be for the foreseeable future,” he assured.

However, he emphasized that he will not remain in competition if he cannot be competitive, setting as a goal the fight for poles, victories, and world titles for the rest of the decade. “I don’t want to stay longer than necessary,” he added.

Currently, Hamilton is not the oldest driver on the grid, as Fernando Alonso, at 45, continues to compete with Aston Martin until 2027. This situation allows Hamilton to envision a possible continuation in F1 until at least 2030 if he maintains his performance at the highest level.

The competitive capability of veteran drivers, like Hamilton and Alonso, contrasts with concerns about the quality of younger drivers, as Alonso pointed out regarding incidents during the early laps of races.
