Lewis Hamilton matched his childhood idol Ayrton Senna today with his 65th career pole at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit in Montréal. Sebastian Vettel was 2nd ahead of Valtteri Bottas.
Q1 ended with Wehrlein‘s Sauber against the barriers after making a mistake in turn 1. This hindered everybody else’s improvement and left Vandoorne, Stroll, Magnussen, Ericsson and Wehrlein eliminated.
Palmer made it through Q1, but he couldn’t do better than last place in Q2 behind Grosjean, Sainz, Alonso and Kvyat. The Russian driver had a puncture at the end of the session after hitting the wall. The battle for the pole was extremely close between Hamilton and Vettel until Hamilton‘s very last lap, where he managed to set an incredibly quick time. Vettel‘s was 3 tenths slower, while Bottas and Räikkönen were once again remarkably behind their teammates.
