The latest sprint race of the 2026 Formula 1 season was a spectacle full of chaos. Only 13 of the 22 vehicles crossed the finish line, with notable incidents such as George Russell’s accident and the collision between the McLaren drivers that generated debate in the paddock.
Although the first of the two races at the Marina Bay Street Circuit was not as boring as expected, the drivers warn that overtaking remains an almost impossible task. On a partially wet track, there was only one racing line, which complicated overtaking maneuvers for drivers trying to gain positions.
Lewis Hamilton, who finished second in the sprint, has expressed his concern and stated that more changes are needed at the circuit to make the competition more attractive for both fans and drivers.
Over the years, several modifications have already been made to the Marina Bay Street Circuit. In 2013, the complicated chicane known as Singapore Sling was altered, and recently, the original section of corners 16 to 19 was eliminated in 2023 due to construction work.
According to Hamilton, it is essential to create more overtaking opportunities. ‘I love racing here, but I was telling Max that we need to change the circuit to create a longer straight somewhere and be able to overtake,’ commented the seven-time world champion.
Additionally, he added that even though it was entertaining, the sprint race should not be seen as a representative example of the races in Singapore. ‘It was fun, but if it had been dry, it would probably have been the most boring race you could have seen,’ Hamilton pointed out.
In full agreement with Hamilton, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc have also questioned the decision to hold sprint races on urban circuits. Verstappen explained that tracks like Singapore and Monaco do not offer overtaking opportunities, which detracts from the interest in the races.
‘We shouldn’t have a sprint where overtaking isn’t possible,’ Verstappen said. ‘The track is beautiful, but the current regulations and the overtaking system do not help at all to make it more exciting.’
Leclerc was more adamant in his stance, stating that sprint races should not be held on urban circuits in general. ‘They should be held on circuits where overtaking is easy, where you can really enjoy the racing action and that adds value to the weekend.’
