First time in a lot of season that Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 have two rounds in two weekends with any resting time. This time, Nürburgring will held another passionate battle for the championship between the Josef Kaufmann Racing cars, Koiranen GP and Anthoine Hubert (Tech 1 Racing).
Anyway the ART Junior Team with Ukyo Sasahara and the wild-card Max Defourny started up on front. This weekend the series have 35 contestants after driver’s changes and wild-cards from Formula Renault 2.0 NEC championship racing here, to get the rhythm before the upcoming round in this track, next week.
Sasahara dominated in the lead during the first half of the session when, championship point’s leader, Louis Delétraz (Josef Kaufmann Racing) took the first place for 0.007 seconds in a 1:58.956 lap time. Then when the Swiss driver came into the pits, Jake Hughes (Koiranen GP) set the fastest lap with 23 minutes remaining.
With 15 minutes remaining, the ART Junior Team of Max Defourny back on top when 17 drivers were driving in 1 second of distance. The lap times with new tyres help to the whole field to improve its lap times, D’Agosto (Manor MP Motorsport) and O’Keeffe (Fortec Motorsports) were the first to show that pace.
With 23 drivers on 1 second of distance in the final minutes, Jake Hughes retook the lead again ahead of one of the wild-cards of the weekend, Dries Vanthoor (Josef Kaufmann Racing). We know that’s just a first practices session but, the differences between each driver are very short, and the Josef Kaufmann Racing cars at the end take an extra fastest laps to put Louis Delétraz on top with 2 minutes remaining.
The lap time by the BMW young driver wasn’t enough as Jake Hughes retake the lead once again before the checkered flag, when the Swiss attack again with a lap 0.002 seconds faster. It seems like he was going to be the fastest of the session but Feridnand Habsburg (Fortec Motorsports) finally, set the fastest lap of the day at the moment.
