Gresini Racing will not renew its deal with Aprilia after it ends in 2021 MotoGP season as Marc Marquez is back home after being released from the hospital.
Having partnered new entrant Aprilia from 2015 onward, after its deal with Honda ended, Gresini Racing will not renew its contract with the Italian manufacturer beyond the 2021 MotoGP season. It will, however, continue to compete in the premier class.
A new five-year deal was signed by Gresini with the IRTA to compete as an Independent team from 2022 onward until the 2026 MotoGP season. “We’re happy to announce this agreement with IRTA, which will see us in MotoGP for five years starting from 2022.
“We will not be representing Aprilia as a factory team anymore, so we will continue as an Independent Team, doing so with as much will and commitment. There’s a lot of work to do and many things to define and communicate.
“Obviously we’re already working on this huge project, and we will reveal the details little by little. Stay tuned,” stated Fausto Gresini in a statement. The team has been racing in the MotoGP category since 1997 and has amassed 41 podiums and 14 wins so far.
With no partnership with Aprilia, it looks like that Gresini will have a new partner going forward. With the advancements made in 2020, Suzuki has been speculated to be looking to add a satellite outfit in its roster and this could be a timely move.
Rival manufacturers like Yamaha, KTM and Honda, have one satellite team to run, while Ducati has multiple. Also, Gresini is the first independent outfit to confirm its participation in MotoGP, whereas KTM is the only manufacturer to do so.
Elsewhere, Honda’s Marquez returned home after his third surgery on his arm/shoulder. The Spaniard went through the operation successfully but developed an infection, for which, he was forced to stay back at Hospital Ruber Internacional for few more days.
While he has been discharged, Marquez will continue with his specific antibiotic treatment, to eradicate the infection. Here’s the Instagram post he shared: https://www.instagram.com/p/CIvpSlcqmor/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
