Lewis Hamilton celebrates a major breakthrough for the Grand Prix of Africa

Formula 1 will return to Africa for the first time since 1993, with news that has surprised the global motorsport community. In an unexpected turn, F1 is about to approve an agreement to hold a race in Rwanda, sidelining the well-known Kyalami circuit in South Africa, with the aim of starting the competition in the 2030 season.

For Lewis Hamilton, driver for Ferrari, this decision is a personified victory. Hamilton has been a staunch advocate for the need to include a race in Africa in the F1 calendar, and this announcement represents years of promotion and pressure with the competition’s executives.

A necessity for the championship

Hamilton has repeatedly expressed how important this new Grand Prix would be. ‘I have said several times that we need a Grand Prix in Africa; for me, it is the most important continent and also the most beautiful’, declared the world icon, emphasizing the symbolic significance of this event for the category.

Although South Africa seemed the most logical option to host this re-entry into Africa, Hamilton confessed to having held private conversations with Rwandan officials, acknowledging their commitment and long-term vision to secure a place in the modern F1 calendar.

Rwanda versus South Africa

This new project has left many South African fans disappointed, who hoped that Kyalami would be the stage for F1’s return to the continent. The South African Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, acknowledged this week the defeat in the competition for the agreement, officially confirming the calendar for the Grand Prix of Rwanda.

‘We are happy for Rwanda and their Grand Prix in 2030; they have worked longer than us and deserve it’, McKenzie stated. However, he underscored that South Africa will not give up entirely and promised local fans an event, assuring that the continent, made up of 55 countries, deserves more than just a single race.
