George Russell, driver of the Mercedes, has reflected on the thrilling podium achieved at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a circuit that holds special meaning for him. This race marks an important moment in his career, which began in his childhood.
Russell, who visited the circuit for the first time at age 11, fondly remembers the moment he achieved his first victory in motorsport on the same track. It was also here that he experienced his first laps in a Formula 1 car.
In an interview on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show, he expressed his gratitude for being able to step up to the podium at Silverstone: ‘I went to Silverstone for the first time as an 11-year-old kid. And I won my first car race here. It was the first time I drove an F1 car.’
After starting the race from fourth position, Russell faced Max Verstappen for third place when he received news of a puncture. After a mandatory pit stop, he returned to the track in seventh position, but fought to recover and avoid further bad luck.
‘I wasn’t surprised. We’ve already had our share of bad luck this season. When I had the puncture, I was overtaking Max for P3, and I thought: ‘Here we go again’. But luck changed for Russell when a Safety Car was deployed after Verstappen got stuck in the gravel. With Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, entering the pits, Russell decided to stay on track, thus inheriting second position.
‘If someone had told me that, after coming out of the pits in P7 behind Isack Hadjar, I would finish in second position 14 laps later, I would have thought it was impossible. Unless it rained a lot’, he shared with surprising humility.
Russell concluded his reflection with a message of perseverance, emphasizing the importance of continuing to fight in competition, never giving up.
