Nico Rosberg, Formula 1 world champion in 2016, has praised George Russell’s recent performance, stating that the British driver has regained his best level after a challenging start to the 2026 season.
After a difficult beginning, Russell faced numerous obstacles during the first races, including car troubles and strategies affected by poorly timed safety cars. Despite presenting himself as one of the title contenders after winning in Melbourne and in the sprint race in China, his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, took the lead in the championship, winning six grands prix in the early part of the season.
After the summer break, Russell has returned renewed. He achieved victory in the sprint race in the Netherlands starting from pole and qualified second for the Dutch Grand Prix race.
Rosberg, in statements to _Sky Sports F1_, acknowledged that Russell’s performance in the first part of the season was surprising to everyone. ‘His speed was not what we expected,’ Rosberg commented. ‘Antonelli was simply faster.’ Now, Rosberg has noticed a positive change in Russell’s attitude, who, according to him, seems more relaxed and is showing the level he is known for.
For his part, Russell has also commented that he feels more comfortable with the car, which allows him to compete with more confidence. ‘I hope it continues like this. The car feels more intuitive, and I have more confidence,’ he explained. ‘The Ferraris and Lando will be fast, so it will be a good fight in today’s race.’
