Nico Rosberg, Formula 1 World Champion of 2016, has assured that George Russell has once again shown his best performance after a difficult start to the 2026 season.
Russell started the season with high expectations, after achieving victory at the Australian Grand Prix and the sprint race in China. However, he faced several setbacks, such as the influence of poorly timed safety cars and issues with his car.
His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, took advantage of this situation, leading the standings during several races and winning a total of six grands prix during the first half of the season.
After the summer break, Russell has shown a significant improvement. He won the sprint race in the Netherlands and qualified second for the Dutch Grand Prix. Rosberg has commented that his performance has once again positively surprised the entire Formula 1 environment.
In statements to Sky Sports F1, Rosberg emphasized that Russell’s lack of speed in the early races had been unexpected. ‘It wasn’t just bad luck, he also wasn’t at his best level. Antonelli has been the fastest driver,’ Rosberg explained.
Russell, at 28, expressed that he feels more comfortable with his car, stating that he now has more confidence and that his times are more intuitive. ‘I hope this good moment continues. Today we will have an interesting race, as the Ferrari team and Lando Norris are showing good pace,’ he concluded.
