After the recent Dutch Grand Prix, former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer has pointed out that George Russell is in a complicated situation within his team, Mercedes. Palmer believes that the Brit ‘isn’t yet at the level’ of his competitors, especially his teammate Kimi Antonelli.
The Dutch GP concluded with Mercedes achieving a double podium, with the team occupying second and third places, after Lando Norris of McLaren. However, the strategy known as ‘team order’ –which saw Russell give up his position to Antonelli– has generated controversy and debate.
The maneuver took place after a pit stop, when Antonelli returned to the track on new tires. Russell, who was in a favorable position, expressed his disagreement during the radio communication, warning about the risks of this decision. Nevertheless, after the race, he admitted that the strategy had been correct.
Palmer commented to F1 TV: ‘I can understand Mercedes’ logic. George may be upset, as he had a difficult day today. His starts were complicated, and that distanced him from the top two.’ According to the analyst, Russell did not have the necessary pace during the race, which increases the pressure on him.
Despite the third position, Russell currently occupies second place in the drivers’ championship, tied on points with Lewis Hamilton (183 points each), while Antonelli maintains the lead in the standings with 242 points.
