George Russell, driver for Mercedes, has made his frustration clear following the bad luck he has experienced recently after losing the lead in the Formula 1 championship during the Japanese Grand Prix.
After a brilliant start to the 2026 season, where he secured victories in Melbourne and in a sprint race in Shanghai, Russell has seen his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, surpass him by nine points following two consecutive wins in the races in China and Japan.
The British driver suffered a transmission issue during qualifying in Shanghai, which limited his chances of competing on equal footing. Additionally, in Suzuka, a modification to the adjustment of his front wing complicated his performance during the qualifying session.
During the Sunday race, Antonelli started from sixth position but managed to lead the race thanks to a strategic pit stop, while Russell, who had changed tires just one lap earlier, finished fourth, thus achieving his first result outside the podium this season.
Russell commented: “In races, sometimes it goes well for you and sometimes it doesn’t. Right now, it seems that over the last two weekends, all the problems have been on my side”. The driver is not worried about losing the lead, stating that it is only the third Grand Prix of the season and there is still plenty to compete for.
With the next Grand Prix in Miami scheduled for May 1-3, Russell is hopeful of reversing the situation: “We’re on a four-week break, so there’s no momentum to carry on. It’s time to reset and prepare for the next race”.
