George Russell, Formula 1 driver for the Mercedes team, has shared his reflections on the second place achieved at the British Grand Prix, a significant moment that reaffirms his connection with the legendary Silverstone circuit.
For Russell, standing on the podium at his home race represents a journey that started when he was a child. He recalls his first visit to Silverstone at just 11 years old, a place where he achieved his first victory in motorsport and where he made his first laps in a Formula 1 car.
“I feel very grateful to have been there because I came to Silverstone for the first time as an 11-year-old child,” Russell said during his appearance on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show. “Here I won my first race and it was where I drove a Formula 1 car for the first time.”
After starting the race from fourth position, Russell found himself involved in an intense battle with four-time champion Max Verstappen for third place, when he received the news of a puncture that forced him to make a pit stop, dropping to seventh as the race resumed.
“I didn’t react much. We had already had our share of bad luck this year. When the puncture came, I was passing Max for P3. And then it was like I was saying, here we go again,” he explained. Everything changed thanks to a safety car triggered by Verstappen, allowing Russell to regain positions and inherit second place after the Ferrari drivers and Lewis Hamilton stopped to change to soft tires.
“If someone had told me I would come out of the pits seventh, behind Isack Hadjar, and we would finish second 14 laps later, I would have thought that was impossible, unless it started to rain,” the driver commented, highlighting the dynamic nature of competition. “But that’s sport, you have to keep fighting and not give up.”
