The 2026 Formula 1 season has been a complete disaster for Mercedes driver George Russell. After a mechanical failure that cost him a guaranteed result in the Bahrain Grand Prix, held in Malaysia, the Brit is now 84 points behind his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli in the drivers’ standings.
Despite the string of reliability issues that have marked his season, Russell arrived at the press day for the Singapore Grand Prix without wanting to point only to his team for his current situation.
In his intervention at the Marina Bay circuit, Russell gave an honest assessment of his performances, acknowledging that “he does not feel satisfied enough” with his results so far. “I don’t think my performance has been good enough, regardless of the luck I’ve had,” he stated. “I want to focus on aspects that I can control”.
Historically, Russell has excelled in qualifying, often outperforming seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. However, in this season, Antonelli has prevailed, leading the qualifiers with a score of 9-7 and with 11 race results ahead of the Brit.
Russell acknowledged that the numbers speak for themselves. “Throughout my career in Formula 1, I have had a good record against my teammates, especially in qualifying,” he explained. “If before I had an 80-20 in my favor, now I might be at 40-60 or less, which shows that I haven’t done enough this season”.
With his title chances practically extinguished and an engine penalty approaching during the weekend in Singapore, his goal is to improve his internal performances and not get lost in lamentations.
Russell also added that every weekend he looks in the mirror to reflect on how he can improve. Now, the Mercedes driver faces a tough challenge in the imposing conditions of Singapore, needing a spectacular performance to achieve a good result from the back of the grid.
