Gasly’s impact in FP2 reduces Alpine’s expectations

Pierre Gasly went through a complicated moment during the second free practice session of the Belgian Grand Prix, when a driving error ended against the barriers at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. The accident, which occurred in the last minutes of the session, forced the tests to be halted.

The French driver experienced oversteer when exiting the Les Fagnes section, which sent him towards the gravel and subsequently hit the barriers. Steve Nielsen, managing director of Alpine, commented that “a small mistake” on this track can have serious consequences, and added: “A mistake that in many other circuits would have been harmless has turned into a bad moment here”.

Gasly, for his part, explained that he suffered significant oversteer: “It was a major jolt. It took me a while to regain control, and when I did, I was already off the track”. However, despite the incident, it was an encouraging day in terms of performance for the team.

At the moment of the accident, Argentine driver Franco Colapinto had set the seventh-best time, standing out ahead of the second car in the midfield with a 0.147-second advantage over Arvid Lindblad. Colapinto expressed satisfaction with the performance: “We found a bit more speed and that is positive”.

With the aim of improving the configuration of the vehicles, Gasly noted that it is essential to analyze the day’s performance and adjust the details for the next session. “We tested several parts and now we need to decide what is best” he added.

Despite Gasly’s error, the team considers that the day was productive. “We need to ensure that we do not lose the achieved rhythm,” concluded Nielsen, referring to the progress they have been able to make in the team’s structure.
