An extreme weather warning suspended the qualifying for the Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The qualifying was not continued and the grid will be set based on drivers’ points.
The qualifying started two hours before its originally scheduled time because of the bad weather forecast for the afternoon. A crash by Zachary Claman DeMelo at Turn 1 interrupted the qualifying after eight cars from the field of 16 had completed their qualifying attempts. No more drivers got to make their qualifying attempts as an extreme weather warning caused the qualifying to be suspended. The heavy rain didn’t allow the qualifying to be continue and the grid will be set based on drivers’ points.
Ed Jones for Carlin was leading the qualifying before it got suspended and will anyway start on pole as the Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires points leader. Alongside Jones will start the Indy Lights rookie Santiago Urrutia. Starting in the second row will be Kyle Kaiser and Felix Serrales.
A practice session took place in the morning. Juan Piedrahita topped the session with an average speed of 197.957 mph. Piedrahita was followed by Zach Veach in second and RC Enerson in third place. The points leader Jones was fourth in the morning practice.
Earlier in the week, Indy Lights tested at IMS on Monday. The Monday test saw the first 200+ mph lap from an Indy Lights car as Zach Veach reached an average speed of 201.455 mph, aided by a draft and fresh tires.
The Freedom 100 will start on Friday at 12:30 pm local time (6:30 pm CET).
