The mythical circuit of Monaco will be made completely for the 2019 season of Formula E. This has been confirmed by the CEO of the competition Alejandro Agag. The track of the Monaco’s Circuit used by Formula One was shortened for the electrical championship. The cars do not go through the hill, or the casino area, the hairpin, the tunnel or the chicane. All of them mythical sections.
The first time that the Formula E run in Monaco was in its first season four years ago. It was not in the calendar of the 2015-2016 season but returned in 2016-2017. Facing this season, Formula E will not visit the circuit. So, the measure is for 2018-2019.
“Monaco is back and we will use the full track”, announced Agag. “The short track was too small; it was ok, but it is much better for us to race on the big one.” said the CEO of Formula E.
The drivers of the grid have also given their opinion. Buemi thinks it’s a success: “I think first of all with the new cars, it’s going to be very difficult to continue on the small tracks. Of course Monaco is the smallest track of the whole season and it’s very difficult to overtake there. With more power and better cars, it’s going to be very important to go on the big one”.
Another driver who has run in the complete layout with a F1 car is Jerome d’Ambrosio, who also follows Buemi’s opinion: “Formula E has never been about what will happen if you go up or downhill, it’s a question of if you are going flat-out. I think doing the full circuit is a no-brainer as it will provide much more overtaking opportunity at places like Mirabeau and the chicane. There is no reason whatsoever why we can’t race there and the Season Five cars will be giving exactly the right message to everyone about EV technology”.
The third edition of the Monaco E-Prix will be in May 2019.
