The FIA Formula E Championship board has decided to promote series founder Alejandro Agag to the Chairman role ahead of the start of the 2018/19 season.
A big change has been made by the Formula E series board with the announcement of the promotion of Agag to the Chairman role just a day ahead of the start of the 2018/19 season of the all-electric series in Saudi Arabia.
Agag founded the championship which started in the 2014/15 season amid huge criticism with the fans not liking the electric formula which they reckoned was not motorsport as the cars were slow without the noise essence.
However, the series only strengthened as years went by with manufacturers joining the championship to showcase and develop its electric chain as the world slowly embraces the electric cars in daily life.
With Season 5 just around the corner, the promoters announced Agag’s promotion with immediate effect – although he is to continue in his CEO role until his replacement is hired. In his new role, Agag will focus on the commercial side of the series.
Agag will replace the current Chairman, Simon Freer. “It’s time to open a new phase in the world’s fastest-growing motorsport,” said Agag. “I’m really proud of the job we’ve done, together with the FIA, our management team, shareholders, partners and teams.
“Formula E is in the best moment of its short history. As Chairman, I’ll be better placed to help the new CEO and our strong management team to continue growing the sport that I believe is the future of motor racing.”
On behalf of Formula E and the board, Freer added: “Under Alejandro’s leadership as CEO, the series has established itself as a leading global motorsport and is set to continue its impressive performance and trajectory going forward.
“We look forward to continue working with both Alejandro as Chairman and the new CEO to bring Formula E to the next level.” Not only has the all-electric series grown with new manufacturers but it has expanded to various new places as well including Saudi Arabia.
