The Formula 2, the main feeder series to Formula 1, will debut in Miami and Montreal this May, as announced by the FIA and the competition management. This inclusion in the schedules of the Miami and Canadian Grand Prix comes after the cancellation of races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia due to the conflict between the United States and Israel.
The cancellation of these two events left a three-month gap in the F2 calendar, which had scheduled its next race for the Monaco Grand Prix in early June. Now, the category will be able to compete as part of the Miami race, followed by another event at the Montreal circuit at the end of the month.
Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1, expressed his enthusiasm for the inclusion of F2 in these events, highlighting that it is great news for both fans and drivers and teams. “Although it has not been possible to hold the two races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the collaboration between F2, us, and the promoters of Miami and Montreal has been crucial to keep the competition calendar active for this season,” he added.
For his part, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem highlighted that the addition of these new races continues to drive the global growth of F2, connecting with new audiences in North America. However, the competition in Montreal will coincide with the important Indianapolis 500, complicating driver Colton Herta’s participation in the IndyCar race.
This season, F2 will feature a total of 13 races, including iconic circuits such as Barcelona, Austria, and Abu Dhabi.
