Formula 1 drivers win the battle against penalty points

With seven races already held, Formula 1 drivers have managed to receive only one penalty point this season, thanks to the new FIA guidelines that have relaxed the issuance of these points. Only Franco Colapinto received a point for failing to reduce speed adequately during yellow flags at the Barcelona circuit.

This change has been implemented to prevent excessive penalization of drivers for incidents occurring in the context of competitive racing. With the new guidelines, the race stewards have more freedom to decide whether to impose points and in what quantity, particularly in cases of collisions.

Review of penalty points

Drivers have previously complained that penalty points were unfairly awarded for minor infractions. Under the old regulations, a collision automatically incurred three points. With the new measures, stewards can impose between zero and three points depending on the severity of the incident. For example, Esteban Ocon was given a temporary penalty for a collision but was not awarded any points.

The drivers’ perspective

Drivers believe it is poor practice to penalize collisions that are part of honest competition. The GPDA director, Carlos Sainz, emphasized that points should only be awarded in cases of dangerous behavior, not for minor infractions like improper use of the speed limiter.

Improvement in relations with the FIA

The changes have not only improved the penalty system but also the relations between drivers and the FIA. Sainz praised the working style of the new race director, Rui Marques, stating that communications are now more efficient and cooperative, recapturing the spirit of collaboration that existed with former director Charlie Whiting.

Outlook for Oliver Bearman

One of the drivers benefiting from this new approach is Oliver Bearman, who has been close to suspension in the past. He has expressed his satisfaction with the changes, stating they allow for more exciting competition without the constant fear of losing points for minor accidents.

The new policy has enabled drivers to participate with a more competitive spirit, making the current season develop in a smoother and more exciting manner, an aspect that Formula 1 fans are eagerly anticipating.
