The medical bulletin by the Macau GP organisers have revealed the extent of injuries suffered by the those involved after the heavy shunt for Sophia Floersch.
It was a dramatic 2018 edition of Macau GP after multiple incidents took away the delight of a cracking race won for the second consecutive time by Red Bull junior and Motopark’s Dan Ticktum on the streets of Macau.
The race started with a safety car period for a pile-up involving four cars in Turn 3. Once it was cleared, the race went green but not for long as another heavy shunt at the same corner brought out the red flag, halting the proceedings.
In the fight for 14th involving Team TOM’s Sho Tsuboi, Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala and Van Amersfoort Racing’s Floersch – the latter clipped the right rear of Daruvala on the approach of Turn 3 when the Indian seemingly braked seeing a yellow flash board.
This caught Floersch out as she hit Daruvala and then slid onto the kerb and flew over Tsuboi into the safety fence, hitting the make-shift photographer’s bunker – thereby not only injuring herself but also Tsuboi, two photographers and one marshal.
All five were taken to the hospital immediately in conscious state as per the FIA’s update. Following the check-up, the medical bulletin by the organisers revealed the extent of the injury suffered including the names of the personnel.
The 17-year-old complained of back pain as it was said she suffered with a spinal fracture for which a surgery will be performed on her on Monday as she thanked VAR’s engine partner Mercedes, HWA and the FIA for all the help.
Her rival Tsuboi was admitted to hospital with lumbar pain and the bulletin adds that he will undergo further examination likewise the two photographers China’s Chan Weng Wang and Japan’s Minami Hiroyuki and marshal Chan Cha In.
In suffered a laceration of the face, abrasion of his upper abdomen wall and a fractured jaw, while Weng sustained a liver laceration with Hiroyuki suffering through a concussion – all being kept under observation.
