The use of the homologated helmets in MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 and World Superbike Championship as been deferred until June by the FIM.
Last year, the FIM informed about helmet homologation where from 2019 onward, only the regulated helmets will be allowed in the FIM-backed championships as they moved on from the existing international standard to a more in-house homologated helmets.
As per the last information, the helmets from Bell and Shark had passed the FIM homologation test with the likes of AGV, HJC, Kabuto and Shoei having passed the normal homologation tests but awaited the FIM’s.
At the same time, the FIM’s homologation website has put helmets from Airoh, Arai, LS2, Nolan/X-Lite, NHK, MT, Scorpion, Shiro and Suomy/KYT under the ‘homologation tests pending’ category, while few others under forms pending.
With large number of late requests coming in from the manufacturers to allow them some time for the laboratory tests, the FIM’s panel convened an e-meeting on February 5, with them deciding to defer the mandatory use until June 3, 2019.
The riders competing in MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 and World SBK can use the existing helmets until June 2 with them having to switch to the new homologated ones coded from June 3. The other FIM-backed series’ can use the older helmets until the end of 2019 season.
However, from 2020 onward, all the championship riders will have to use the new ones as per the table added below. The panel who took the call had Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna), Paul Duparc (FIM), Herve Poncharal (IRTA) & Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA) from MotoGP side.
