The FIA is monitoring the situation with regards to the breakout of coronavirus and is to take a call if the situation worsens.
China has been plagued with coronavirus breakout since December, especially in the Wuhan region. It has since spread to multiple countries and even continents as World Health Organisation is looking whether to declare it as an international health emergency.
Traveling from Wuhan has been restricted and certain events have either been postponed or canceled. The FIA, meanwhile, has shared a note where they state that they are monitoring the situation with the local bodies and a call will be taken soon.
The Chinese GP is set to take place on April 17-19 at Shanghai International Circuit. Also, the inaugural Vietnam GP is to take place on April 3-5 at Hanoi circuit. It is not clear from the statement, if the FIA is looking at both the F1 races or just the China one.
“Following the coronavirus epidemic that broke out in China at the beginning of the year, the FIA is closely monitoring the evolving situation with relevant authorities and its Member Clubs, under the direction of FIA Medical Commission President, Professor Gerard Saillant.
“The FIA will evaluate the calendar of its forthcoming races and, if necessary, take any action required to help protect the global motor sport community and the wider public.” the statement said. Just before the F1 race, Formula E is due to take place in Sanya.
The ePrix is scheduled for March 21 date. Should the Formula E race gets canceled, there will be a gap on the calendar with Morocco scheduled on February 29 and Rome on April 4. At the same time, F1 may have a four weeks gap if both Vietnam and China gets off.
It has Bahrain GP on March 22, while Dutch GP is scheduled for May 3. If both Vietnam and China gets canceled, it will leave April without any F1 grand prix and it is to be seen if the FIA brings any other races forward from its original date.
