FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed his sadness and shock at the happenings in Baja California Rally in Mexico after shootout.
The police authorities are investigating a gunfight that took place during an off-road vehicle rally – the Baja California – this past weekend in Mexico. Several videos of the said incident has been posted on social media showcasing the gunfight in Ensenada.
The videos and photos also shows dead bodies with the official count of 10 dead and 10 wounded so far. This shootout pushed for an intense mobilisation of army, navy joining the state and local police to bring things under their control.
Locals and officials note that it was a gunfight between two members of organised crime groups – namely Arellano Felix Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel – and the participants of the Baja California got caught in it unfortunately.
When racers stopped by a gas station in the San Vicente area of Ensenada just over 2 PM local time, a group of armed assailants got off from a van and opened fire towards participants. FIA President Sulayem expressed his sadness and shock in the matter.
“I am horrified by the reports of an appalling attack at the Baja California Rally in Mexico,” he said. “Motor sport events should be safe places for participants and spectators. On behalf of the whole FIA family our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this senseless violence.”
