The FIA has disqualified Alexander Albon from F1 Dutch GP qualifying after Williams failed the legality test concerning the floor.
Following the F1 Dutch GP qualifying, the FIA Technical Delegate Jo Bauer spotted a legality issue with the floor of the Williams car of Albon. It stated that ‘the floor body was found to lie outside the regulatory volume mentioned in Article 3.5.1 a)’.
The rule states: ‘Lie within RV-FLOOR-BODY’. As a result, Albon and Williams – who finished eighth in Dutch GP qualifying – was summoned by the FIA stewards. Having heard the case, they readily disqualified the Thai racer from the qualifying result.
Interestingly, the numbers that Williams had were different to what the FIA measured with their own device. The team, though, didn’t dispute the governing body’s measurement and accepted the fate, where Albon will mostly be permitted to start the grand prix.
His disqualification will change the results with as many as 12 drivers gaining a place at least. Some of them will gain two after the grid drop handed to Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton for impeding Red Bull’s Sergio Perez in Q1 of F1 Dutch GP.
For Williams, it ended up being a disastrous day after the huge accident of Logan Sargeant in FP3. They suffered heavy damage and couldn’t take part in qualifying. It will now be a back of the grid start for both the drivers, as their chance of scoring diminishes.
“Unfortunately, Alex has been disqualified from Qualifying today due to his floor body being outside the regulatory volume set by the FIA,” a statement from Williams said. “We are incredibly disappointed with this outcome and will be carrying out a thorough investigation and will provide an update soon.”
